APPROACHES IN PSYCHOLOGY - WUNDT Flashcards
(17 cards)
Who was wundt what did he do
Father of psychology
Set up first psychology lab in Leipzig Germany 1870s
What did Wundt promote the use of
Introspection
What is introspection
Systematic analysis of one’s own conscious experience eg : thougjt processes feelings emotions sensations
What did introspection involve
Training people to analyse their inner thoughts and then break them down into separate parts
What was the method of introspection
Break down conscious thoughts , they were presented with controlled stimuli ( images tones) controlled conditions same stimulus and same standardised instructions so procedure can be repeated
How did John Watson criticise introspection
He argued it was not objective as it varied from person to person so can’t establish general principles
What are the FEATURES of science (F O R E )
Falsifiability
Objectivity
Replicability
Empirical
Theory
Paradigms
What is falsifiability
When it’s possible to prove hypothesis wrong
What is objectivity
Free from bias
What is replicability
Can repeat Study so it’s reliable
What is EMPIRICAL method
Directly observable, gathered through senses
What are paradigms and paradigm shifts
Paradigm is a distinct set of concepts or thought patterns within a specific domain
Paradigm shifts are when a new paradigm is created due to theory being falsified
Give 3 evaluation points for wundts methods / scientific approach
Method isn’t scientific however some aspects are
Low ecological validity
Useful as used by modern psychologists
How is it argued that wundts research isn’t scientific
Many psychologists said that it’s non empirical its subjective , lack of reliability
How are some aspects of Wundts research considered scientific
Introspection recorded in a controlled lab with standardised instructions
Limitation of scientific method is that it has low ecological validity . Explain
Controlled environments don’t explain how people would behave in a natural environment , psychology is unobservable as it’s in the mind and so can’t be measured empirically
How is introspection still used by modern psychologists ?
Hunter et all use introspective methods to make happiness a measurable phenomenon
He gave group of teenagers beepers that would randomly beep and that when it beeps they have to write down what their thoughts were before beep and he found that most were unhappy
He also found that when their energies were focused on challenging task they were more upbeat
