What is the purpose of negating attributes?
Affirms God’s nature, ensures understanding, and relates to God’s eternal nature and independence.
What are the core beliefs about God?
God’s perfection, uniqueness, holiness, and transcendence. Essential divine quality includes absolute transcendence, perfection, and necessity.
What are the five negating attributes of God?

What does Qidam (Beginninglessness) mean?
God has no beginning; no prior nonexistence. Everything besides God is limited and had a start.
Names: As-Samad (Self-Sufficient), Al-Awwal (The First).
What does Baqaa (Eternality/Endlessness) mean?
God is everlasting and cannot cease to exist. Being necessary, He always was and always will be.
Name: Al-Akhir (The Last).
What does Mukhaalafa lil-Hawaadith (Dissimilarity to Creation) mean?
God is unlike anything in creation. He does not occupy space, have size, or undergo change. Not limited in knowledge, power, or dependent on anything.
What does Qiyaam bi Nafsihi (Self-Sufficiency) mean?
God is independent and self-sustaining. Negates Christian dogmas of God being dependent or unifying with others.
Name: Al-Qayyum (Self-Subsistent).
What does Wahdaaniyyah (Oneness/Uniqueness) mean?
God is one in essence, attributes, and actions. If there were two gods, they would need distinguishing traits, which is impossible for a necessary divine being.
Names: Al-Waahid, Al-Ahad.
How do we recognize God’s uniqueness?
Through contemplating the cosmos—its order, uniformity, and interconnectivity.
What is the goal of Islamic Aqeedah?
To actualize His oneness in our understanding.
What does Sujood (prostration) signify?
It actualizes Allah’s elevated nature (Subhana Rabbi al-A’laa).
What is the summary of negating attributes?
They help affirm God’s true nature and perfection, ensuring we do not project human-like qualities onto Him. Contemplation of these attributes deepens faith and understanding.
