Define mental Health
A persons condition with regard to their psychological and emotional wellbeing
Define Wellbeing
The state of being comfortable, healthy or happy
Define distress
Extreme, anxiety, sorrow or pain
Explain the 4 stages of the Mental Health continuum
Healthy - Normal functioning
Reacting - Common + Reversible distress
Injured - Significant functional impairment
ILL - Clinical disorder, severe persistent functional impairment
Medical Model
Behaviours have a biological/organic/physical cause. Primarily focuses on genetics, neurotransmitters, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology. Brain chemistry explains symptoms and treated by medication.
Psychodynamic Model
Unconscious mind is the source of distress + dysfunction. Unconscious motives and inner conflicts lead to a persons behaviour and personality.
Interpersonal Model
Distress is primarily due to dysfunction patterns of relating/being in contact with others. Anxiety + Psychiatric symptoms arise in conflicts between individuals and human environments.
Cognitive Model
Coping style + appraisals of stressful life events determine how these events influence mental health. Psychological distress worsens whether there is an adaptive way to interpret difficult circumstances.
Biopsychosocial Model
Biological, social, psychological are interplaying. Centered by mental health.
Explanatory Model
Places importance in understanding the persons subjective experience of illness/distress to work collaboratively and to improve focus.
Biopsychosocial + Spiritual
Biological, psychological, social + spiritual dimensions are assessed to understand the wellbeing of the individual.
