Arousal Flashcards
(8 cards)
Arousal
Physiological and psychological state of alertness and anticipation that prepares the body for action
Effects of Under Arousal
- Out of flow state
- Lack of attention (attentional wastage)
- Lack of energy
Effects of Over Arousal
- Can lead to catastrophe and choking
- Attentional narrowing
- Can lead to aggression
Optimal Arousal
- Flow state
- Feels effortless
- High attention
Drive Theory
The more learned a skill is, the more likely there will be high arousal and therefore high performance
Inverted U Theory
Performance is highest at optimum levels of arousal
Catastrophe Theory
A dramatic decline (catastrophe) happened when an athlete suffers from high cognitive anxiety so arousal levels go past the optimum levels
IZOF
ATHLETE 1 (LOW IZOF) = Zone (Optimal Performance), Poor Performance
ATHLETE 2 (MODERATE IZOF) = Poor Performance, Zone (Optimal Performance), Poor Performance
ATHLETE 3 (HIGH IZOF) = Poor Performance, Zone (Optimal Performance
