arrythmia Flashcards
(3 cards)
1
Q
what is arrythmia?
A
characterised by a heart rate that is either <60bpm, >100bpm or irregular.
2
Q
how can arrhythmias be classified?
A
by the origin of depolarisation
- sinus rhythm (SA node)
- atrial rhythm (atria)
- ventricular rhythms (ventricles)
3
Q
why is arrhythmia dangerous?
A
in order for the heart to be effective, it has to depolarise in an organised manner.
normal depolarisation ensures everything happens in sequence to ensure optimal volume of blood is ejected.
therefore, loss of electrical conductivity can reduce SV, HR and limit CO
As a result, for individuals with arrhythmia, there may be a high HR to try and provide sufficient CO, but a low ejection fraction which limits it.
