Q

Why does ARSAC exist?

A

Because, under BSSD and IRMER17, it is a requirement to have a lisence for the deliberate administration of radioactive substances to persons for the purpose of medical diagnosis, treatment, or research.

Q

What is a Particular Patient License (PPL)?

A

A license that can be granted in cases of urgent medical need to employers and practitioners who already hold a valid ARSAC license. After applying, ARSAC puts the practitioner in contact with a fellow pracitioner that has experience of the procedure to provide guidance.

Q

A
  • For a change in contact details
  • For a change if a practitioners radiological installation
  • For a change in named person
17
Q

Who is responsible for holding a valid ARSAC license?

A

The employer and the practitioner

18
Q

In order to renew their license, practitioners must continue to demonstrate _________ and ___.

A

Competence
CPE (continuous professional education)

19
Q

How are research trials approved by ARSAC?

A

Each invidividual trial requires ARSAC approval.

20
Q

How are different procedures separated into ARSAC licensing categories?

A

They are divided into imaging and non-imaging, then further divided by pathology/physiology. It is assumed a clinician will be equally competent in all procedures within the dame functional group.

21
Q

For each procedure, there is a given ________ _______ _____ (___) and an _________ _____ in order for clinicians to justify the procedure.

A

Diagnostic reference level (DRL)
Estimated dose

22
Q

What are the ARSAC notes for guidance on children?

A
  • Ensure the most appropriate investigation is chosen
  • Ensure the dose is justifiable
  • Consider sending the child to a dedicated centre
  • Schedule more time for the appointment
  • Fully inform the child and parent/guardian
  • Lover the administered activity
  • Consider sedation
23
Q

What are the ARSAC notes for guidance on pregnancy?

A
  • Only complete the prcedure if justifiable
  • Follow employer procedures on establishing pregnancy
  • If pregnancy cannot be ruled out check if menstrual period is overdue
24
Q

What are the ARSAC notes for guidance on conception?

A
  • Most diagnostic procedures require no advice for delaying conception
  • For certain therapeutic procedures, conception should be delayed
25
What are the ARSAC notes for guidance on breastfeeding?
- Possibly delay the test - Give specific written instruction - The dose to the baby will include ingestion and close proximity, meaning the patient should pump and discard breast milk as much as possible
26
What is the role of an MPE in administration of radiopharamceuticals?
- They must be involved in all exposures - The should advise the employer on compliance with IRMER
