Asch Flashcards

(12 cards)

1
Q

Did Asch find his research was NSI or ISI?

A

Normative social influence as the conformed to the answer that was clearly wrong due to fear of rejection.

Q

How is controlled procedure making it a strength?

A

No extraneous variables affecting the research which increases internal validity making sure it measures what it intends to.

Q

How is being scientific a strength?

Q

Why is an artificial setting a weakness?

A

Low ecological validity and cannot be generalised to conformity in normal social settings, increased chance of demand characteristics.

6
Q

Why does Asch,s research lack population validity?

A

All ppts were white, American males meaning it cannot be generalised to females which are argued more likely to conform, also cannot be generalised to other cultures like collectivist as America is an individualist culture.

8
Q

What were the results when Asch changed group size?

A

With 1 conformity was 3%, 2 was 12%, 3 confederates rose conformity to 32% which stayed the same for the remaining confederates added, showing 3 confederates is the highest level for conforming.

Q

What were the results of unanimity?

A

Instead of all giving incorrect answer, one gave same throughout which dropped conformity to 5%, in another experiment one gave different to majority which made conformity drop to 9%.

Q

What does unanimity show?

A

Ppts who have support in their belief are more likely to resist pressure to conform, those who break the chain of unanimity also reduce conformity even if answer is incorrect.

11
Q

What was an issue with group size variation?

A

When using 15 conferates conformity rates dropped, this may be due to ppts getting suspicious of the experiment and not due to conformity lowering in larger groups.

Q

What was the results when increasing task difficulty?

A

When making lines smaller the conformity increased, as a result of ISI where ppts were unsure about the answer.
