Comformity Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is NSI?
Normative social influence is conforming in order to fit in with the group with the same belief, this is in order to not stand out and will not be long lasting.
What is ISI?
Informational social influence is changing your belief due to you believing the group is correct or knows more than you, they conform to decrease uncertainty, this is likely long lasting.
What is compliance?
An individual changes their public opinion but not their private due to fit in, this is likely not long lasting.
What is identification?
A person aligns their public and private opinions with the group in order to fit in, however this may not be permanent as they are doing this to identify with the group.
What is internalisation?
You change your opinion publically and privately as you view the belief as correct, this is permanent and continues even without group present.
Which researcher supports ISI?
Lucas
What did Lucas find?
When students were presented with difficult math problems, especially those with low math scores, they were more likely to conform as they believed the majority knew the answer.
What is a weakness of NSI and ISI research?
Individual differences are not considered as some may not want to be apart of a group due to personality, NSI and ISI do not account for this.
What are individual differences shown with social support?
Collectivist cultures such as Korea were found to obey more than an individualist country like USA which showed more uniqueness, Kim and Marcus found due to adverts in Korea showing community whereas USA shows individualist.
What is a study supporting resistance to CONFORMITY through social support?
Allen and Levine found if one person in Asch’s study said a different answer, even if wrong, it would support ppts to resist pressure of conforming to confederates.
What is a study supporting resistance to OBEDIENCE through social support?
Gamson studies if ppts in large groups would obey authority when asking them to be in favour of firing a manager for speaking out about high oil prices, 29 out of 33 groups disobeyed, showing peer support has affect when resisting obedience.
