Locus Of Control Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is internal LOC?
Where you believe you are in control of your life, using ur own decisions and efforts.
What is external LOC?
Where you believe your life is controlled by fate and external factors, such as luck.
How do internals relate to social influence?
They are more likely to resist pressure from others due to them being achievement orientated, actively searching for information to help them.
How to externals relate to social influence?
More likely to be persuaded by others as they believe they don’t have control over their life.
What is the research support for LOC?
Holland recreated Milgrams study and measured 37% of internals resisted going to the highest shock level, however 23% of externals did, showing internals resisted more which supports LOC is related to resistance, increasing the validity.
What is a limitation of LOC?
Research from over 40 years shows that over time people became more resistant to obedience but also more external, we would expect to be internal if resisting more, which contracts LOC, lowering validity.
