How would an HCA respond to resistance?
● Pay attention to the cues
● Respond to emotional messages
● Redirect to something more pleasant
● Try again later (this saves time and reduces anxiety)
List and describe with examples of what the causes of resistance are
Physiological: pain, vision problems, constipation, chronic illness, hunger, needing the bathroom, lack of sleep, drowsiness
Environmental: new place, poor lighting, too many distractions, boredom, bad smells (food or others)
Other: confusion, poor coordination, unclear instructions, task too hard, feeling rushed, tension from others, fear or anxiety
Describe the distract and act method
Distract and Act is a two-person approach used to help a person with dementia during care.
● The first person distracts the client by gently talking to them, holding their hands, keeping eye contact, and using reassuring touch.
● The second person does not speak to avoid confusing the client with too many voices. They quietly and gently complete the care task quickly.
This method helps reduce resistance and makes care easier and calmer.
How can caregivers promote self-esteem for their clients?
● Treat clients with respect and dignity.
● Use the person’s preferred name and speak kindly.
● Encourage clients to do tasks they can manage independently.
● Praise their efforts and small successes.
● Focus on their strengths, not just their limitations.
