What is Confusion?
Confusion is when a person has trouble thinking clearly or understanding what is happening around them.
Also called disorientation - A symptom of an underlying medical condition can be caused by physiological changes in the brain.
Name S/S of Confusion:
● Anxiety
● Behaviour changes (anger, restlessness, depression, irritability)
● Tremors
● Hallucinations
● Delusions
● Disorganized thinking and speech
What causes Confusion?
● Infections (like UTIs)
● Alcohol intoxication
● Head injuries or concussion
● Fever
● Medications
● Brain tumors
● Physiological or mental health illnesses
● Sleep deprivation
What is the relationship between confusion and delirium?
● Confusion means having trouble thinking clearly and feeling disoriented.
● Delirium is a brain disorder that causes confusion and affects memory, thinking, and behavior.
Define Delirium?
Delirium is a mild or major neurocognitive disorder
(a condition that affects thinking, memory, and decision-making)
What causes Delirium?
● Infection
● Dehydration or malnutrition
● Medication side effects or not taking medications properly
● Alcohol or drug withdrawal or intoxication
● Worsening chronic illness
● Pain
● Recent injury or fall
Differentiate between Disorientation (confusion), Delirium, and Dementia
● Disorientation (Confusion): When someone is unsure about time, place, or who they are. It’s a symptom, not a disease.
● Delirium: A sudden change in thinking and behavior causing confusion. It can usually be treated and reversed.
● Dementia: A slow, ongoing decline in memory and thinking that affects daily life. It is usually not reversible.
What is an HCA’s responsibility with regards to managing and supporting someone with delirium?
● Provide a safe environment to prevent falls and injuries
● Remind about time, place, situation)
● Communicate clearly and patiently
● Support emotional needs and offer reassurance
● Monitor changes and report to the healthcare team
