Define Reminiscing and list its benefits
Reminiscing is the act of recalling past experiences.
● Helps people come to terms with their life by connecting past, present, and future
● Can lead to self-acceptance and support self-actualization (Maslow)
● Stimulates conversation
● Reduces disorientation
● Encourages social interaction
● Promotes self-esteem / self identity
How important is it to be accurate with what we are reminiscing?
● Accuracy is not important
● Do not criticize or try to correct
● Do not challenge the accuracy of events as they shift over time for everyone
List ways in which HCA’s can provide memory friendly environments
● Choose locations with minimum distractions
● Ensure physical and emotional comfort
● Keep groups small and compatible
● Be aware of language, hearing, and vision challenges
● Use topics with positive meaning
● Go slowly and give time to absorb information
● Allow for silent reminiscing
What can HCA’s do if the client experiences a painful memory?
● Demonstrate empathy and focus on feelings as well as content
● Use touch if appropriate
● Listen carefully without interrupting
● Do not challenge the accuracy of the memory
