Q

how many people were there on a jury? is this more or less fair?

A

a jury would have from 201 to 501 people, depending on the severity of the case, it could be argued that this is more fair as there is a larger variety of people all with differing perspectives and opinions. however, a verdict will take a lot longer to arrive to.

A

6,000 people are chosen to vote, 600 from each tribe volunteer and are placed into 10 different groups in which they vote. this is fair because everyone in Athens will be represented unlike today where only a small percentage of people are represented

Q

what were you paid as a juror?

A

a juror was paid 3 obols. although it was not quite enough to live on, it was attractive to old people and the very poor, perhaps turning off the more well off from volunteering making this less fair

Q

at what age can you become a juror?

A

jurors had to be over 30 and a citizen to be eligible to vote, this is a significantly smaller pool of people due to the stricter requirements for citizenship (i.e. men only, over 30, enlisted in the army etc) so was therefore less fair.
