Q

What does this show?

A

Their conflicting personalities creates tension between the two. Antigone is more traditional in her mentality. She is most comfortable not straying away from that where ismene is not, she does not care about religion as much as her sister and would rather live her life by the rules of a more corporeal superior. It also suggests that Antigone is more family orientated than ismene who enjoys her status more as she would rather not upset the man with the power to take that away.

Q

what does this create?

A

this obviously creates a lot of tension between the two as essentially he is dismissing the entire basis of how she lives her life, she is infuriated by Creon’s ignorance and eventually goes ahead with the burial ceremony anyway, further angering creon. in a way, both characters are similar as they are both stubborn in their beliefs and completely unwilling to back down, even if it results in death.

Oedipus also has a lot of conflict with his brother, creon, for example when Oedipus accuses him of murder. in scene 3, creon has heard that he has been accused by oedipus of plotting against the king and cannot believe oedipus would think he’s capable of this. oedipus then enters and angrily accuses him of treason, to which creon denies.
