Q

What decision is Antigone faced with right away?

A

In Antigone, her character is faced with a difficult decision right away. A decree was passed that one of her brothers was to be buried but the other, a traitor was to be left to rot, and no one was to mourn him and that his body should be left to decay. She decides that it’s her duty as a woman to perform funeral rights on her brother and give him honour in his death. This is the will of the gods and her responsibility as a Greek woman that she should carry out this task.

Q

What does this show?

A

Here Antigone is displaying her strong will, common traits within a good leader, and shows the audience that she is unlikely to backdown in a battle of wills. She also shows her loyalty and strong familial bonds as even though her brother is a traitor, she still refuses to abandon him and will ensure he gets a proper burial even if it goes against the wishes of the king. This paints her as a strong capable leader as she is able to stick to her beliefs and is extremely loyal.

Q

What does this show?

A

Antigone’s actions, although they show will and determination, also highlighting her selfishness and her pride as she kills herself out of pride, not thinking about how that would impact her family and resulted in their deaths. This displays poor leadership skills as a good leader is able to relinquish their pride for the greater good, which she cannot do. Although Antigone displays many characteristics that make a great leader, she also displays an abundance of things such as stubbornness and lack of foresight that make her an overall bad leader.

Q

what does this show?

A

Antigone is a young girl about to be married who behaves badly by stepping outside her role as a woman by breaking the law and openly insulting Creon. However, Creon is an older, more experienced worldly man who also happens to be Antigone’s king, uncle and Guardian. he should have behaved better; we would expect a good leader to be in control of his emotions and a model of good behavior. instead he matches Antigone’s poor behavior and anger, sentencing her and her innocent sister to death.

Q

what dies this show?

A

his pride disallowed him to listen to those around him who are only trying to help him. this displays his more negative leadership qualities as a good leader needs to be advisable rather than taking sole leadership. this highlights that oedipus can become very self absorbed when faced with a challenge even if that means destroying himself and his family in the process, further highlighting his less than kingly qualities.

17
Q

how is oedipus still a good leader?

A

ultimately, Oedipus is doing this for the good of his people, when advised not to discover the truth at risk of his own status, he puts his people first and tries to be the best king he can be.

18
Q

whats another way Oedipus is a bad leader?

A

oedipus could also be viewed as a bad leader when he discovers the truth and reacts very poorly. he, once he finds out he is the son of his wife and the man he murdered, proceeds to witness jocasta kill herself out of despair and gouges his eyes out with her broaches as to not see what he has done

19
Q

what does this show?

A

his reaction is extreme and results in his permanent blindness. however, this can be viewed as very selfish as he is no longer able to rule and he let his emotions get the better of him, ultimately leaving Thebes without the great leader that Oedipus was for selfish reasons.

20
Q

how can this be viewed as positive change?

A

However this can be viewed as positive change for thebes and ultimately be beneficial to his people. after his self mutilation, oedipus decides to leave Thebes and allow his brother Creon to rule over in his place. this act will rid thebes of its plague as the reason for Laius’ death is leaving thebes as per the prophecy

21
Q

what does this show?

A

in leaving thebes behind, oedipus is displaying excellent leadership qualities, he understands that he cannot go on knowing what he has done and instead if staying and potentially damaging his country forever. he chooses to leave and benefit his people with the rule of someone more capable than he is.

22
Q

how is Oedipus as a leader overall?

A

Although this one difficult decision he makes does not make him a completely unflawed ‘good’ character as he has still made questionable decisions, refused help and is extremely egotistical and the good does not cancel out the bad, his heart is in the right place as he always tries to do everything for the benefit of his people which must be noted.
