what was a quaestor? what was their job?

A

Provincial Governors were assisted by an officially appointed quaestor, whose job it was to supervise the collection of taxes, and by various other junior officials, most of whom were friends, relatives or clients of the governor, and were selected by the governor himself.

how did many governors view their term?

A

Many governors performed their duties honestly and fairly, but some were corrupt, and looked on their period as governor as a good chance to make as much money as possible. They needed it after many sending themselves into debt during their election.

why was Cicero an example of a good governor?

A

there were some who spent their time as governor honestly, one such man was Cicero. Judging by what he wrote in many letters, he was a hard-working, conscientious, leader who regularly travelled around his province talking to the people, listening to their grievances and presiding over court cases.

how was Cicero not greedy? how can we tell?

A

He did what he could to ensure that the provinces were not put to anymore expense than necessary, and were generally able to lead a peaceful life, governing themselves by their own laws as far as possible.

how did Cicero use the army outwith war?

A

he made use of the troops another way, by putting an end to the bandits that plagued the province, which he did showing that even though there was no battle to be fought at that time, he still made use of the troops that would benefit the society
