Atmosphere Big 20 Vocab Flashcards
Thermal conduction
The transfer of energy as heat through a material.
Air pressure
The measure of the force with which air pushes on a surface
Water Vapor
Water in it’s gas form.
Global Winds
Major winds that blow one direction over long distances.
Global warming
An increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere.
Troposphere
The lowest layer of the atmosphere, at which temperature decreases at a constant rate.
Land breeze
A breeze that blows from land to the sea and occurs at night because the land cools faster than water.
Jet Stream
A narrow belt of strong winds that blow in the upper atmosphere.
Land Breeze
A breeze that blows from the sea to the land and occurs during the day, because water heats up at a slower rate than land.
Convection
The movement of matter due to differences in density due to differences in temperature.
Barometer
A tool scientists use to measure the amount of air pressure in the atmosphere.
Wind
The movement of air due to differences in air pressure.
Ozone layer
A layer in the stratosphere that protects us from harmful radiation.
Smog
Pollutant gas that forms when ozone and vehicle exhaust react with sunlight.
Coriolis Effect
The apparent curving of the path of an object from an otherwise straight path due to Earth’s rotation.
