Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures Flashcards
What makes a particle a pure substance?
Only one type of particle can be an element like gold-Au or a compound like H2O- water
Pure substance that cannot be cannot be broken down into a simpler substance by physical or chemical means
Element
Are elements and compounds pure substances?
Yes
What are 3 properties of metals?
Shiny, good conductors of heat and electricity, malleable, and ductile
What are 3 properties of non-metals?
Dull, brittle, and poor conductor of heat and electricity, and non-malleable
What are 3 properties of metalloids?
Somewhat malleable and ductile, semiconductors, and has properties of metals and non-metals
A substance and of two or more elements joined with chemical bonds.
Compound
Do ratios for compounds have to be exact?
Yes
What is the difference between a compound and an element?
An element is composed of one atom, whereas a compound consists of more than one type of element chemically bonded to each other
What is a molecule and how does it relate to a compound?
A molecule contains two or more of any type of atom- ex H2 or H2O
How are compounds broken down?
Through chemical changes: ex burning and corrosion
What is needed for a chemical change to take place that will break down a compound?
Adding heat or electricity
A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined
Mixture
Identify 3 ways mixtures can be separated.
Distillation, magnetism, filtration, and centrifuge
Separates mixtures according to densities
Centrifuge
