Atoms Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is an element?
a substance made up of one type of atom
What is a compound?
a substance made up of more type of atoms that are chemically bonded together
list some properties of metals
- high melting point
- high boiling point
- sonorous
- shiny
- brittle
-good conductots of electricity
Why is water not an element but a compound?
water is a compound because compounds are made of two or more types of atoms, water contains hydrogen and water that chemically bond together
what is it meant by conservation of mass?
- during chemical reactions atoms cannot be created or destroyed, they can only be rearranged meaning total mass of reactants= total mass of products
Describe the structure of a nucleus in an atom:
- atoms are very small
- they have a radius of about 1X10^-10m
in an atom where is most of the mass concentrated at?
- in the nucleus
describe the particles in the nucleus of an atom:
- contains two types of sub-atomic particles
where are electrons orbitting?
- energy levels
what is the mass number of an atom?
- protons + neutrons
what is the atomic nmber:
- the number of protons and electrons
difference between atomic number and mass number?
atomic number- protons and electrons
mass number- protons plus neutrons
location of protons, neutrons and electrons:
- protons- nucleus
- neutrons- nucleus
- electrons- around energy levels
