the noble gases Flashcards
(6 cards)
1
Q
what are elements in group 0 called?
A
- Noble gases
2
Q
describe the electronic configuration of noble gases
A
- the electronic configuration is stable
- meaning they are inert / unreactive and do not easily form molecules
3
Q
what does inert mean?
A
unreactive
4
Q
why do we use helium for baloons and airhips?
A
- because helium is denser than air meaning it will float
5
Q
how does the melting point change as you move down the noble gases group?
A
the atoms get larger meaning there will be need of more energy to overcome these bonds
6
Q
why does neon have a lower melting point than argon?
A
because neon atoms are smaller than argon atoms , meaning intermolecular forces between the atoms are weaker, less energy needed to overcome the intermolecular forces for change of state to take place
