electronic configuration Flashcards
(9 cards)
1
Q
how can an electronic configuration be shown?
A
- with numbers or a Bodr diagram
2
Q
why do atoms have no overall charge?
A
- because the number of protons/ atomic number is the same as the number of electrons meaning the atom will have no overall charge
3
Q
are atoms 3D or 2D?
A
3D
4
Q
how might the electronic configuration change?
A
- due to absorption of electromagnetic radiation which will cause the electrons to move higher in energy levels further away from the nucleus
- may also change the emission of electromagnetic radiation, meaning electrons will move to lower energy levels so closer to the nucleus
5
Q
what are ions?
A
atoms that have lost or gained electrons
6
Q
what happens when atoms lose or gain electrons to have a full outer shell?
A
they become neutral and electrically neutral
7
Q
what type or elements are negative ions
A
non metals
8
Q
what type of elements are positive ions?
A
metals
9
Q
difference between stable and neutral in chemistry:
A
- neutral refers to the overall charge of the atom
- stabelk refers to the internal structure of the atom e.g how conductive it is due to the energy levels
