Atoms and the Periodic Table Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is the atomic number?
The atomic number of an element tells you how many protons an element has
What is the properties of a proton electron and neutron?
Proton - charge: +1 mass: 1 location: nucleus
Electron - charge: -1 mass: 0 location: energy levels outside necklines
Neutron - charge: 0 mass: 1 location: nucleus
Why are atoms neutral?
Because the positive protons and negative electrons cancel each other out.
What is the mass number?
The mass number of an element tells us the number of protons + neutrons in an atom.
What are isotopes?
Isotopes are atoms with the same atomic number but different mass number.
What are the 7 diatomic elements?
Nitrogen, oxygen, flourine, chlorine, bromine, iodine and hydrogen
What are the periodic table facts?
Chemicals are arranged in atomic number order
Horizontal rows and called periods
Verticals columns are called groups
Group 1 facts- alkali metals
Most reactive metals
Very reactive
1 outer electron
Most reactive at bottom
All solids
Group 2 facts- alkaline earth metals
Less reactive than group 1
Most reactive at bottom
2 outer electrons
All solids
Still very reactive
Group 7- halogens
Solids, liquids and gasses
Most reactive non-metals
Very reactive
7 outer electrons
Most reactive at top
Group 8- noble gases
Unreactive
8 outer electrons
All gasses
Non-metals
