Ionic Bonding Flashcards
(12 cards)
What types of atoms form ionic bonds?
A non-metal and a metal
Are ionic binds strong or weak?
Very strong
What is an ionic bond?
An ionic bind is the electrostatic force of attraction between the positively charged metal ions and the negatively charged non-metal ion.
What happens in an ionic bond?
An Metal Atom Loses an electron to form a positive ion and a non-metal atom will gain electron to form a negative ion.
What is OILRIG?
Oxidation is losing, reduction is gaining
What do ionic compounds form?
Giant ionic lattice
What is a giant ionic lattice?
Regular repeating arrangement of metal and non-metal ions which creates a compound. It has a very high melting point and boiling point
Do ionic substances dissolve in water or non-aqueous solutions?
Some dissolve in water but nine dissolve in non-aqueous solutions
Conductivity of ionic compounds
Conduct when molten or in solution
What are some ionic compounds not soluble?
Due to extremely strong bonds within the ionic lattice.
What is electrolysis?
Electrolysis is the breaking up of an ionic solution using electricity.
Why must I direct current power supply be used?
to allow the products of electrolysis to be identified.
