Rate of Reactions Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are the 5 signs of a chemical reaction?
Fizzing/bubbles
gas produced
colour change
temperature change
odour change
How to change the speed of a reaction?
Catalyst
Temperature
Concentration
Particle size/surface area
How to speed up a reaction?
Add a catalyst
Increase temperature
Increase concentration
Decrease particle size
Increase surface area
What is the rate of a reaction?
It is a measure of how fast the reactants are being used up and how fast the products are being made
How to calculate the rate of a reaction?
Average rate= change in measurable quantity
change in time
Advantages and disadvantages of the mass balance method
Ad- clean method, accurate
Dis-balance may nit be suitable for mass required, have to make sure cotton wool is added to stop splashing
Advantages and disadvantages of the gas syringe
Ad- easy to read, and easy to setup
Dis- limited to measuring 100cm3, loose some gas while setting up at start
Advantages and disadvantages of the downward placement of water
Ad- works well, quick
Dis- tricky to set up, not accurate, CO2 is slightly soluble so impacts results, measuring cylinder doesn’t have scale right to bottom
What type of line is used in a rate of reaction graph?
A curve
What is the collision theory?
The particles that are reacting must collide with each other. Only some of the collisions that happen cause a chemical, to change. The more successful collisions the greater and faster the reaction
What is a catalyst?
A catalyst is a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction by can be recovered chemically unchanged at the end of a reaction.
