.bias evidence -bowlby conducted the interviews -lack of internal validity
.bowlby was criticised by rutter -for not distinguishing between privation (never forming bond) and deprivation (disruption/loss of bond) -privation may be worse, e.g. many of the juvenile thieves actually suffered privation
