Memory: types of LTM Flashcards
(8 cards)
What are the different types of LTM?
Episodic
Semantic
Procedural
What is the episodic LTM?
.memory of events (time stamped)
.explicit
What is the semantic LTM?
.memory of facts and general knowledge
.explicit
What is the procedural LTM?
.memory of actions and skills
.implicit
Which types of LTM are explict and what does explicit mean?
-episodic and semantic
-have to think about them
Which type of LTM is implicit and what does implicit mean?
-procedural
-automatic
What are some of the things in support of the LTM?
-HM could make new procedural LTM but not episodic and semantic
-Irish et al:
.alzheimer’s patients can lack semantic but not episodic or the other way round
What are some things that don’t support the LTM?
-over-reliance on brain damage patients -just because you lose a part of your brain and also lose a specific function, it doesn’t mean this area was exclusively used for that function -difficult to generalise from these case studies to determine the exact nature of LTM
-priming:
.programmed to think in a certain way, thinking can be effected without your explicit knowledge which suggests a second type of implicit
