intense response to overwhelming situation
- when someone becomes overwhelmed by their current situation and temporarily loses control of their behaviour
know meltdown and temper tantrum ARE NOT THE SAME why
temper tantrums is due to bad/nauty behaviour but a meltdown is a coping mechanism to an overwhelming situation
besides meltdown, how might autistic people express overwhelm

autistic ppl are at increased risk of premature mortality from preventable and treatable illness and are at an increase risk of death by suicide

what are some reasonable adjustment for austitic patient before appointment, in waiting room /
before appointment:
- discuss the appointment before hand (let them know who the healthcare worker is, what will happen during, whats expected from them etc) (helps lower anxiety)
waiting room:
- making it more sensory suitable e.g removing clutter, reducing bright light
try give longer pPPOINTMENT times for autistic patient so it gives them time to understand and process
things u need to consider when communicating to autistic patient?
- use ur name
- talk about hobbies/intrests
- filter out less useful info
- use key words
- speak less and clear
- give time for processing and response
- dont ask a lot of questions
- visual suppors
kids with disabilities more likely to experience abuse than non-disabled kids but abuse is less likely to be reported (miller and brown 2014)
