NEWS2 Flashcards
(10 cards)
what does NEWS2 stand forehand why’s it used
National Early Warning Score (NEWS)
- tool which improves the detection and response to clinical deterioration in secondary care. It is a key element of patient safety and improving patient outcomes.
NEWS2 is needed to prevent poor communication of patient info
what 6 things are recorded on NEWS,(know the normal rages for each of these)
respiratory rate
oxygen saturation
blood pressure
heart rate
consciousness
temperate
what is the scoring mechanism for NEWS
each category is scored 0-3
(2 additional points is used for supplemental oxygen allowing a total score between 0-20 which can be used as a predictor of death/survival and therefore communicates physiological risk.)
(the higher the score to more urgent the case)
insufficient oxygen causes increase of what compound in body, whats a normal range for this
Lactate provides further evidence of deterioration. It is formed by anaerobic metabolism. Lactate is produced in large amounts when there is insufficient oxygen for activity in the cell. As a result lactate production is a consequence of high cellular workload and inadequate oxygen in cells and tissues.
A normal lactate is 0.5-1 mmol/L
Lactate > 2.0 = 5 x mortality
whats normal level of urine output
urine output should be 0.5mls/kg/hr.
whats sepsis
body’s response to infection causes injury to its own tissues and organs.
news score of less than 5 = low mortality rate
news score of 9 or greater = high mortality rate
what are the 5 levels of conciousness
Aware
V (response to verbal stim)
C confusion
P (repsons to pain stim)
U (unconscious)
sphygmomanometer measures what
bp
