Axial Skeleton Flashcards
(35 cards)
What is a process in bone terminology?
Any bony projection.
Define tuberosity in skeletal anatomy.
A roughened, raised area on a bone, usually for muscle attachment.
What is a protuberance in bone terminology?
A projection beyond a bone’s surface.
What is a spine in bone structure?
A sharp, slender, often pointed projection.
What is a tubercle?
A small rounded projection on a bone.
What is a trochanter and where is it found?
A large, blunt, irregular projection; only found on the femur.
What is a fossa in bone anatomy?
A shallow basin-like depression, often an articular surface.
Define condyle in bone terminology.
A rounded articular projection.
What is a head in bone features?
A bony expansion carried on a narrow neck.
Define facet in bone terminology.
A smooth, nearly flat articular surface.
What is a foramen?
A round or oval opening through a bone.
Define groove in bone structure.
An elongated indentation or furrow.
What is a notch?
An indentation at the edge of a structure.
What is a fissure?
A narrow, slit-like opening in a bone.
What is a meatus?
A canal-like passageway in bone.
What is the mastoid process?
A bony projection behind the ear, part of the temporal bone.
What is the styloid process?
A slender, pointed projection from the temporal bone.
Where is the zygomatic process located?
Projects from the temporal bone and connects to the zygomatic bone.
What is the mandibular fossa?
Depression in the temporal bone that articulates with the mandible (TMJ joint).
What is the external acoustic meatus?
Canal-like opening in the temporal bone; ear canal.
Where is the occipital condyle?
Located on either side of the foramen magnum; articulates with the atlas (C1).
What passes through the foramen magnum?
The spinal cord.
What is the external occipital protuberance?
Midline bump on the posterior part of the skull’s base.
What bones form the anterior cranial fossa?
Frontal, Ethmoid, Sphenoid, and Parietal bones.
