What does an analogue to digital converter do?

Used to convert analogue data into digital data.

Analogue.

What is data logging?

Computers can be used to collect data about physical variables by connecting the computer sensors through an ADC

Describe the process of a temperature of a certain place being controlled.

The temperature is preset by the user, who enters the data into the computer system using a keypad, keyboard or other suitable input device. The sensors continually send analogue data about the temperature to the ADC. The ADC converts the analogue data into digital data and sends this to the computer. The computer reads the digital data and compares it with the preset temperature. If the temperature is lower than the preset one, the computer sends digital data to the DAC which converts it to a signal to switch on the heater and motor. If the temperature is higher than the preset one, the computer sends data to the DAC which converts it to a signal to switch off the heater and motor.

Give three things that sensors can monitor in the human body.

Changes to breathing, heart rate, blood sugar, blood pressure, blood alcohol, oxygen levels.

Name three ways which can be used to monitor people's activities using ICT.

CCTV, electronic tags, security systems.

What are robots?

Robots are machines that are computer controlled and usually look nothing like humans.

What are the advantages to a company of using robots?

There is no need to have humans working in dangerous areas, there is no need to employ so many workers, robots can work 365 24/7, the end product is more consistent and to a higher quality etc.

What are the disadvantages to a company of using robots?

The initial setup and purchase costs may be high, IT experts on high wages need to be employed to maintain and service the systems, power cuts and robot breakdowns may cause damage to the products or even cause the factory to stop producing, workers may lose their jobs.
