B1. Characteristics of living organisms Flashcards
(6 cards)
How many characteristics of living organisms are there?
7
What are the seven characteristics of living organisms?
Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition (MRS GREN)
What is meant by “respiration” in living organisms?
Respiration is the chemical reaction that releases energy from the breakdown of food.
Define “excretion” in biological terms.
Excretion is the removal of toxic materials, waste products of metabolism, and substances in excess from the body.
What does “sensitivity” mean for living organisms?
Sensitivity is the ability to detect or sense stimuli in the internal or external environment and respond to them.
How does “growth” occur in living organisms?
Growth is a permanent increase in size and dry mass by an increase in cell number or cell size or both.
