B9. Transport in animals Flashcards
(32 cards)
What does the circulatory system consist of?
a pump (heart)
blood vessels
valves
What are valves for?
To ensure one way flow of the blod
How many litres of blood are continually pumped around the body by the human heart?
5 litres
On average how many times does the heart beat a day?
115,000
How much blood does the heart pump every day?
over 7000 litres
What are the atria?
the upper chambers in the heart
What are the ventricles?
The lower chambers in the heart
What is the heart made out of?
muscle, the septum is cardiac muscle
What are the 3 ways you can measure heart rate?
electrocardiogram
sound of valves closing
determining pulse rate
What blood vessels are there?
artery
veins
capillaries
Do arteries have a small lumen?
yes
Do veins have a small lumen?
yes
do capillaries have a small lumen?
yes
What do arteries carry?
oxygenated blood (exception for the pulmonary artery)
What do veins carry?
unoxygenated blood (exception for the pulmonary veins)
Is there high pressure in the arteries?
yes
Is there high pressure in the veins?
no
What is the structure of the capillaries?
small lumen
one cell thick wall
only wide enough for blood cells to squeeze through single file
What is the wall of an artery and a vein made out of?
muscle and elastic fibre
What does blood consist of?
1) plasma
2) red blood cells
3) white blood cells
4) platelets
What is plasma?
watery fluid which transports blood cells, ions, soluble nutrients, hormones and carbon dioxide in the blood.
What are platelets?
platelets are fragments of cells that are involved in clotting if the skin breaks, to prevent pathogens form entering the body.
What is the structure of red blood cells?
biconcave
no nucleus to make space for haemoglobin
