Q

What do veins carry?

A

unoxygenated blood (exception for the pulmonary veins)

17
Q

Is there high pressure in the arteries?

18
Q

Is there high pressure in the veins?

19
Q

What is the structure of the capillaries?

A

small lumen
one cell thick wall
only wide enough for blood cells to squeeze through single file

20
Q

What is the wall of an artery and a vein made out of?

A

muscle and elastic fibre

21
Q

What does blood consist of?

A

1) plasma
2) red blood cells
3) white blood cells
4) platelets

22
Q

What is plasma?

A

watery fluid which transports blood cells, ions, soluble nutrients, hormones and carbon dioxide in the blood.

23
Q

What are platelets?

A

platelets are fragments of cells that are involved in clotting if the skin breaks, to prevent pathogens form entering the body.

24
Q

What is the structure of red blood cells?

A

biconcave
no nucleus to make space for haemoglobin

25
Why are red blood cells biconcave?
for more surface area to diffuse oxygen faster so they can squeeze through capillaries
26
What is haemoblogin?
haemoglobin is a protein which combines with oxygen when levels are low and releases it when levels are high.
27
Explain the structure of a white blood cell
almost colorless large nucleus
28
What do white blood cells do?
they ingest and destroy pathogens (phagocytosis) or they produce antibodies
29
What is coronary heart disease
when their is a blockage in your coronary arteries.
30
What are coronary arteries?
they are arteries which wraps round the outside of the heart
31
What do coronary arteries do?
They supply oxygen and nutrients to the muscular wall of the heart so it can produce enough energy to keep pumping
32
What are the risk factors of coronary heart disease?
age diet genetic predisposition gender smoking stress
