What is the endocrine system?
A
composed of endocrine glands that secrete chemicals called hormones into the bloodstream, the blood carries hormone to target organ and produces effect

A
hormonal effects are slower but longer lasting, act in a more general way

What is the pituitary gland?
A
the ‘master gland’, secretes several hormones into the blood in response to body conditions = can simulate other glands to release hormones

Pituitary = growth in children Thyroid = (thyroxine) control metabolic rate Adrenal = (adrenaline) fight or flight response Pancreas = (insulin) blood glucose levels Ovaries = (oestrogen) menstrual cycle Testes = (testosteone) controls puberty and sperm production
