B5 Flashcards
(12 cards)
1
Q
Communicable disease
A
spread from person to person
2
Q
Difference between a virus and bacteria
A
BACTERIA - dupicate quickly from binary fission and can produce lots of toxins to make us feel ill
VIRUS - reproduce inside human body making cell damage
3
Q
Methods of infection
A
1) WATER 2) AIR 3) DIRECT CONTACT
4
Q
How to grow bacteria?
A
- sterilise the petri dish with hot agar
- sterilise inoculating loop
- close lid quickly to prevent unwanted micro organism
- allow oxygen and 25 degrees to prevent dangerous pathogens
5
Q
Preventing infections
A
- hygiene
- destroying vectors
- vaccinations (harmless pathogen entered and we become immune)
6
Q
Viral diseases
A
- MEASLES spread from droplets of sneeze (red rash)
- HIV spread from sharing body fluid (flu like symptoms)
- TMV virus amongst plants (mosaic pattern and loss of colour and loss of photosynthesis)
7
Q
Bacterial disease
A
- SALMONELLA spread through food poisining (bacteria toxins make us vomit)
- GONORHEA spread through std (yellow green discharge)
8
Q
Protist disease
A
- MALARIA spread by female mosquito (fever)
9
Q
Fungal disease
A
- ROSE BLACK SPOT spread by wind (reduce growing)
10
Q
human defenses
A
- skin acts as physical barrier
- mucus traps pathogen
- stomach acid kills pathogens
- Phagacytosis - white blood cell engulfs the pathogen
- produce antibodies that bind to the SPECIFIC antigen and is destroyed
- Antitoxin counteract with toxins from bacteria
11
Q
Mineral deficiency in plants
A
nitrate - stunted growth
magnesium - yellow leaves chlorosis
12
Q
How do plants defend themselves
A
- mechanical = thorns mimicry
- chemical = poison
- physical = tough bark
