B6 Flashcards
(11 cards)
Vaccinations
dead antigen into body
- simulate wbc to make antibodies
- immune as rapid response next time
Drugs
painkillers and reduce symptoms but dont kill bacteria
Antibiotics
kill bacteria without harming normal cells
dont kill virus
Why do we develop new antibiotics
- bacteria mutate and can become resistant
avoid over prescription
Alexander Fleming
ring around bacteria called it penecillin as penecillium mould made it
What makes good medicine
effective safe stable successful
Drug trials
1) PRE CLINICAL TESTING
2) CLINICAL TRIALS - low dose: side effect
high dose: optimum
Double blind trials
some given drug some given placebo
NEITHER PATIENT OR DOCTOR KNOWS
What is a monoclonal antibody
protein that targets particular cells
How are monoclonal antibodies made
1) tumour cells (rapidly divide) + Blymphocytes (antibodies)
2) hybridoma
3) divide quickly
- USED IN PREGNANCY RESEARCH TREATING DISEASE
- HOWEVER HAS SIDE EFFECTS
Cancer and mono clonal antibodies
block receptors on cancer cells to stop it growing
can carry toxic drugs or radiation therapy to stop dividing without any harm to other cells
