B13 Reproduction Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is sexual reproduction?
Sexual reproduction is reproduction that involves a male gamete (sex cell) and a female gamete (sex cell) from two parents
What is asexual reproduction?
Asexual reproduction is reproduction that only involves one parent
What is different between the offspring produced by sexual reproduction and asexual reproduction?
In sexual reproduction, the offspring are all genetically different as two different gamete’s are involved
However in asexual reproduction, the offspring are all genetically identical as only one gamete is involved
What process takes place during sexual reproduction: Mitosis or Meiosis?
Meiosis
What process takes place during asexual reproduction: Mitosis or Meiosis?
Mitosis
In plants, in what form are the gametes?
The gametes are in the form of pollen and egg cells
In plants, in what form are the fertilised cells?
The fertilised cells are in the form of seeds
What are the stages involved in reproduction in plants?
1) The egg cell is found in the ovary of the flower and pollen is produced in the anther
2) When pollination occurs, the pollen and the egg cell meet and fuse in fertilisation
3) The genetic information from the pollen and the egg cell is mixed, causing generic variation in the offsprings
4) The fertilised cells then forms into a seed
