B3:2 digestive system Flashcards
(13 cards)
what is a tissue?
-A group of cells with a similar structure and function
what is an organ?
-A group of tissues working together for a specific function
what is an organ system?
-groups of organs work together to form organisms
what happens during digestion?
-large food molecules are broken down into small molecules by enzymes
-The small molecules can then be absorbed into the bloodstream
what does starch breakdown into?
glucose
what do proteins break down into?
-amino acids
what do lipods break down into?
-glycerol and fatty acids
what happends in the mouth 1
-teeth break down the food
-salivary glands -contains the enzyme amylase
what happens in the stomach
-contract muscular walls
-produces Pepsin (protease)
-contains hydrochloric acid which kills bacteria and provides the right pH for the pepsin
what does the pancreas and gall bladder di at the same time
-pancreas releases pancreatic juices ( all enzymes) into this small intestine
-The gallbladder releases bile (neutralised acid + breaks down fats) into this small intestine
-n
what happends in the liver
-bile is made then stored in gall bladder
what happens in intestine
-releases more digestive enzymes
(carbohydrase, lipase, and protease)
-contain villi where the nutrients are absorbed into bloodstream
-villi=invrease SA, maintains CG, short diffusion distance
what does the large intestine do
-absorb the excess water
