gas exchange Flashcards
(6 cards)
what is constantly being supplied and removed
oxygen and carbon dioxide
how think is the lining of the aveoli and why
-one cell thick for short diffusion spaces for oxygen that u breathe in
-this then is the same for the blood capillary, the oxygen then diffuses into the bloodstream and binds to rbc
how does co2 get out
-diffuses out of the capillary and into the aveoli where it is breathed out
how do you keep the same concentration gradient?
-because oxygen is also being taken away from the area through blood flow as well as being constantly supplied in the Aveola
-so there’s always oxygen in the alveoli but not always in the bloodstream-high to low
what are important features of the Aveoli
-large SA
-very thin- shirt diffusion distance
-moist lining- allow gassed to dissolve and diffuse
-good blood supply- maintains conc gradient
-good ventilation-through breathing
