B3 Organisation & Digestion Flashcards
Year 9 (35 cards)
What is a system?
A system is a set of things that work together as part of a mechanism.
What is a tissue?
A tissue is a group of the same type of cells working together.
What makes an organ?
A group of tissues working together forms an organ.
What is an organ system?
A group of organs working together to perform a specific function is an organ system.
What are the 4 main types of tissue in the human body?
Connective, Epithelial, Muscle, and Nervous tissue.
How many organ systems are in the human body?
11
What is the role of the skeletal system?
It provides support, protection, and allows movement.
What does the muscular system do?
It controls movement and regulates body temperature.
What is the cardiovascular system’s function?
It is responsible for blood circulation.
What is digestion?
Digestion is the breakdown of large, insoluble molecules into small, soluble ones.
What are the main organs involved in digestion?
Mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus.
What are the supporting organs in digestion?
Salivary glands, liver, and pancreas.
What happens in the mouth?
Food enters and is broken down by teeth.
What happens in the oesophagus?
It connects the mouth to the stomach and moves food down by muscle contractions, called peristalsis.
What happens in the stomach?
Food is broken down by hydrochloric acid and muscle contractions.
What happens in the small intestine?
Digestion happens here, and small molecules are absorbed.
What happens in the large intestine?
Water is absorbed, and faeces are formed.
What happens in the rectum?
Faeces are stored here.
What happens in the anus?
Faeces are excreted from the body.
What does the liver do in digestion?
It produces bile, which helps break down lipids.
What does the pancreas do in digestion?
It releases digestive juices that help break down food.
What is a macromolecule?
A large molecule made from smaller molecules called monomers.
What are carbohydrates made of?
Carbohydrates (like starch) are made of glucose monomers and are broken down by amylase.
What are proteins made of?
Proteins are made of amino acid monomers and are broken down by protease.
