B3.1 Gas exchange Flashcards
(7 cards)
1
Q
What is ventilation
A
the exchange of air between the atmosphere & lungs
2
Q
What is gas exchange
A
the exchange of oxygen & carbon dioxide between the alveoli & bloodstream (via passive diffusion) across a membrane
3
Q
What is cell respiration
A
the release of energy (ATP) from organic molecules, enhanced by presence of oxygen
4
Q
How does gas exchange work
A
- Oxygen from lungs taken into the alveoli diffuses into the blood of the surrounding capillaries
- High concentration of carbon dioxide in the blood of the capillaries diffuse into the alveoli to be expelled by the lungs
5
Q
What are the features of gas exchange surfaces
A
- Large SA - faster diffusion
- Thin walls - short diffusion distance
- Good ventilation with air - maintain diffusion gradient
- Good blood supply - maintain high concentration gradient = faster diffusion
6
Q
How to maximise rate of diffusion
A
- Permeable membrane
- Surface must be moist
- Surface must have large SA to volume ratio
- Surface must be thin
- Large concentration gradient across the respiratory surface
