Bandage Techniques in Companion Animals Flashcards
(11 cards)
1
Q
Why are bandages used?
A
- to exert pressure that helps prevent swelling or bleeding
- immobilizing fractured limbs
- absorbing wound drainage
- to protect the wound –> bacteria and further injury
2
Q
what are the properties of the ideal bandage?
A
- easy to apply, comfortable
- free of sticky residue
- can be sterilized, long storage life
- no adverse healing effects
- nonflammable
- removes and stores exudate away from wound
- provides needed support to injured wound
- provides needed support to injured limb
- provides thermal insulation and maintains moist environment
- cheap
3
Q
what are the bandage components?
A
- primary - contact
- secondary - intermediate/absorbent
- tertiary - outer/protective
4
Q
what are the functions of the primary layer?
A
- remove damaged tissue tissue
- deliver topical medications
- form an occlusive seal over a wound
5
Q
what is the function of the secondary layer?
A
- absorption of wound fluid
- support
- compression
- protect wound from trauma
- avoid excessive pressure: limit absorption
6
Q
what is the function of the tertiary layer?
A
- protects from environment
- holds bandage in place
- immobilizes (not tight)
7
Q
what is the robert jones bandage?
A
- used for temporary support of a fracture
- stirrup –> cotton wrap –> conforming bandage –> separate tape stirrups (rotate) –> vet wrap
8
Q
what is the modified robert jones bandage?
A
- used to protect wound and prevent swelling
- stirrup –> cast padding –> conforming bandage –> separate tape –> vet wrap
9
Q
what are splints?
A
- used for stability, soft tissue repair
- stirrups, cast padding, conforming bandage, splint, conforming bandage, vet wrap
10
Q
what are open wound-hand pressure bandages?
A
- control bleeding, protect wound
11
Q
what is bandage care?
A
- close observation and care is critical
- change often as necessary
- keep clean and dry
- cover with plastic when outside/remove plastic inside
- monitor for swelling proximal and distal
- monitor for foul odor
- licking and chewing can indicate a problem
