Confounding Impacts / Variables Affecting Animal Well Being and Research Outcomes Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are easily recognized and controlled variable examples?
diet, environment temperature, humidity, ventilation, light cycle, water noise
what are not easily recognized and controlled variable examples?
animal genetics, latent disease, environmental contaminants, microbial transmission, subtle behavioral stressors, idiosyncratic reactions
What are examples of diseases induced by humidity?
heat stroke
low humidity - ringtail in rats and mice, increased dust accumulation, affects mucociliary escalator in lungs
What are examples of diseases induced by temperature?
heat stroke or chilling
What are examples of diseases induced by ventilation?
removal of waste gases (carbon dioxide and ammonia)
why would you want an animal room to have positive air pressure with respect to the hallway?
it protects animals from airborne contaminants from the common hallway
What are examples of diseases induced by noise?
induction of stress, hearing damage/deafness, audiogenic seizures in gerbils and rabbits
What are examples of diseases induced by light?
retinal damage, cataract formation, altered circadian rhythm
why would you want an animal room to have negative air pressure with respect to the hallway?
it prevents escape of disease agents or toxic airborne chemicals from the animal room in the common hallway, contaminating other rooms or staff
What are possible intentional exposures of chemical contaminants within the animal’s environment?
anesthetics, analgesics, tranquilizers, parasite treatments, antibiotics
What are possible unintended exposures of chemical contaminants within the animal’s environment?
air, water supply, feed, bedding, caging, equipment
