What is baptism?
A sacrament through which people become a part of the Church, involves the use of water with the symbolism of washing away sin.
Why is baptism significant for Christians?
It symbolises a new life with Christ, cleanses sins and follows Jesus’ example.
What is infant baptism?
It is baptism which happens as a baby, removing original sin from the newborn/infant. It is common in the Catholic and Orthodox churches. The priest will baptise them, in the name of God (the Trinity), and pour water over the head of the baby.
What is believers’ baptism?
It is baptism for adults, who show personal faith and maturity over their baptism. It is common in Baptist and Pentecostal churches, where they believe a baby is too young to understand the meaning of baptism, therefore should wait until they are old enough to come to a mature decision. It involves a full immersion into a pool of water, symbolising a cleaning from sin, and the start of a new life with Christ.
