Bendingggg Flashcards
(3 cards)
1
Q
Assumptions in the engineers theory of bending
A
- beams bend to constant radius of curvature 1/R
- plane sections remain plane (no slippage)
- material has linear constitutive equation: Young’s modulus = stress/strain
2
Q
When and where instability occurs
A
- Buckling can occur when a light or thin component is subjected to a compressive load
- shear loads have tensile and compressive components so may also buckle
- in biomechanics, buckling is most likely to occur in long slender columns
3
Q
Stability in bending
A
Stability refers to the tendency of a system to return to its original state after it has been disturbed
Moment from tension: stable
- only one solution, strong desire to return to original position
Compressive buckling: unstable
- weakly resistant to compression, many solutions, weak desire to return to original position
