1997 NATO-Russia Founding Act on Mutual Relations, Cooperation and Security, which remains the formal basis for NATO-Russia relations
2002 “NATO-Russia Relations: a New Quality”
Russia–NATO Council was established in 2002 for handling security issues and joint projects
2008: Georgia, South Ossetia and Abkhazia
NATO seemed to be expanding to the East, and there was a matter of considering Georgia’s membership
2014: All practical cooperation suspended
2019: withdraws from INF treaty
Russia-China ALL PHASES
1) Phase 1: 1990s
- Settlement of borders disputes → of utmost importance for their relations
- Gorbachev reopened relations, Yeltsin signed it. - Putin finished the issue, Medvedev signed the final protocol (2006)
- 1992-93 Agreements on Military operations
- 1996 Joint declaration anticipating a multipolar world
- 1996-97 Confidence building and border demilitarisation
- From them on → regular meetings
2) Phase 2: 2000s
- Consolidation of joint actions
- Relations escalated to head of government and ministers
- 2001: Treaty of good neighborhood (economic coop, diplomatic rela, geopolitical reliance, military knowhow exchange)
- Military simulations
- BRICS (2006)
- Final demarcation (2006, Medvedev)
3) Phase 3: 2010s
- Russia sought alternative to Western technology → boosted RU-CH relations.
- China impartial on Ukraine
- 2014-15 Joint declaration: now more transfer of modern arms and tech
- Russia expected for investments and loans, but China is not interested → created mistrust
- No one wants to get involved in the other’s relation with US
- Russia’s concerns: China economy expansion can challenge Russia’s status quo; modernising China can alienate Vietnam, India and Japan; Ru can isolate too much from the West and be stuck with China
