Bio-energetics (Topic 4) Flashcards
(33 cards)
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water —> oxygen + glucose
What is an independent variable?
The thing that you change in a experiment
What a dependent variable?
The thing that you measure in a experiment
What is a control variable?
The thing that you keep the same in a experiment
Is photosynthesis exothemic or endothermic?
Endothermic
What organelle in a plant does photosynthesis?
Chloroplasts
Where are chlorophyll found?
In chloroplasts
5 things that glucose can be used for?
- For respiration
- Converted into starch for storage
- Used to produce fat or oil
- Used to produce cellulose for cell walls
- Used for protein synthesis which produces amino acids
How does the rate of photosynthesis affect the biomass of a plant?
More photosynthesis means more grows, so more biomass.
Give two reasons that they may be less chlorophyll in the leaf.
- If the plant has a disease, like tobacco mosaic virus or rose black spot.
- If the plant does not have enough minerals like magnesium.
What happens in your muscles during exercise?
- There is a build up of lactic acid which contributes to muscle fatigue.
- Muscles stop contracting effectively.
- An oxygen dept is created.
What happens to lactic acid build up?
Sent to the liver which it is converted back into glucose.
What is oxygen dept?
The amount of oxygen the body needs after exercise to get rid of the lactic acid
How does your body clear the oxygen dept?
You keep a higher breath rate and deep breaths after exercise to repay the dept.
For the effect of light intensity practical. How do you measure the rate of photosynthesis?
Count the number of bubbles released in a given time.
For the effect of light intensity practical. What is the independent variable?
Distance of the lamp from the pondweed.
For the effect of light intensity practical. Why would you add a heat shield?
To be able to control the temperature of the pond weed.
What type of reaction in respiration?
Exothermic
What does mitochondria do?
Respiration
Name two cells that have lots of mitochondria in?
Muscle cells and sperm cells
What does carbohydrates break down into?
Sugar/glucose
What does lipids break down into?
3 fatty acids and glycerol
What does protein break down into?
Amino acids
What is the word equation for respiration?
Glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water
