Biochem Lesson 1-3 Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is Homeostasis?
Homeostasis is the ability to maintain an constant internal environment in response to environmental changes
explain cell theory
1All organisms are made up of one or more cells.2 All cells come from pre-existing cells.3 The cell is the basic unit of structure and organization that performs life functions.
what is the scientific method?
asking questions, observing the world and formulating hypotheses
what is a hypothesis?
A hypothesis can be used to propose a logical experiment(testable prediction)
What is an independent variable in a science experiment?
The independent variable is the factor a scientist manipulates to get results
What is the dependent variable in a science experiment?
The dependent variable will respond to changes to the independent variable. the purpose of the experiment is to see how changes to the independent variable affect the dependent variable
What is the control variable?
The control variables are the things held constant in every trial of the ecperiment
What is a control group?
A control group is a sample that undergoes all the same steps in the experiment except the one being tested
What are three examples of homeostasis in your body?
Blood ph, blood pressure, internal body temperature
What are the three functional components of Homeostatic control systems? What are their purposes?
Receptor detects change(detecting the stimulus) and sends information to control center, Control center processes information from the receptor, Effector produces an appropriate response
What is an adaptive response?
When the control center directs the effector to behave in a way that normal state is regained(shivering)
What is the difference between negative and positive feedback?
Negative feedback opposes the stimulus and pushed back toward set point value while positive feedback increases the stimulus and is pushed farther from the set point value
What does Oxytocin do? where is it made? Where is it stored?
It causes the uterus to contract and it is made in the hypothalamus and stored in the posterior pituitary gland
List three properties of water
High surface tension, universal solvent and high heat capacity
What do we give the name of cohesion of water molecules at the surface of a body of water?
Surface tension
What gives water its cohesive properties?
The oxygen end having a slight negative charge and the hydrogen having a slight positive charge, the hydrogen atoms of one molecule are attracted to the oxygen from other water molecules
