Lesson 6 Flashcards
(19 cards)
What are the three main functions of proteins?
1.provide structural support 2.movement 3.Metabolic functions
What are enzymes?
Catalysts that speed up biochemical reactions
What are antibodies?
Proteins of your immune system that fight disease
What is hemoglobin
A protein that transports oxygen in your blood
What is a dipeptide?
When two amino acids join together to form a dipeptide
What are essential amino acids?
Amino acids we must get from food
What does protein contain?
Carbon, Hydrogen ,Oxygen, Nitrogen and sulfur
What are the six roles of protein
Storage, Transport, regulatory, movement, structural and enzyme
What proteins help with structural support?
Elastin, collagen in cartilage and bone, muscle cells
What proteins help with movement?
Actin and myosin
How do proteins help with metabolic functions?
Enzymes speed up chemical reactions amd lower the amount of activation energy needed for the reaction
What does amine group act like?
A base, it picks up H ions
What does carboxyl group act like?
An acid, releases H ions
What is different about every amino acid?
The remainder group
What is the structure of an amino acid?
a central carbon with 4 things bonded to it. an amino group, a carboxyl group, hydrogen and a side group “R”
what is a polypeptide?
more than 2 amino acids joined together
What is a protein?
A polypeptide chain with around 75 or more amino acids in length
what happens if a protein is denatured?
It has lost normal structure /shape because normal bonding between R groups has been disturbed
What is a glycosidic bond?
When a disaccharide is made by joining two monosaccharides involves removing a water molecule
