biochemistry Flashcards
(33 cards)
what parts are in a plant cell?
cell membrane
cell wall
cytoplasm
nucleus
chloroplast
vacuole
what does chlorophyll do?
transfer the sun into food
why are the four requirements for photosynthesis
sunlight
carbon dioxide
chlorophyll
water
what are the products of photosynthesis?
glucose and oxygen
what controls the pores opening or closing on a leaf?
guard cells
where does the carbon dioxide move to in the leaf to be used for photosynthesis?
palisade mesophyll
what is the hollow tube that water enters the leaf by called?
xylem tube
what do the epidermis and waxy cuticle do?
stop bacteria entering and water from escaping
what do palisade mesophyll cells have a special feature of?
lots of chlorophyll
where are palisade mesophyll cells found?
near the top
what is a vascular bundle?
a vascular bundle is a large airspace
why is a leaf thin?
it helps allow gasses diffuse easily
why have leaves adapted to change direction?
to absorb more sunlight
what does the xylem and phloem do?
transport water to the leaf and take sugars away
why does leaves have many stomata?
allows for gas exchange
what process happens in the roots?
respiration
what does nitrogen cause if there isn’t enough of it?
poor growth
what does magnesium cause if there isn’t enough of it?
poor growth and yellowish leaves
what does phosphorus cause if there isn’t enough of it?
weak shoots and roots
what does nitrogen do for plants?
makes proteins that are used for growth
what does magnesium do in a plant?
makes chlorophyll
what does phosphorus do in a plant?
it is needed to help cells grow and divide
what is respiration
it is the process of releasing from glucose
where does glucose come from in aerobic respiration?
from food
