Biodiversity Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is biodiversity
The measure of different species of organisms on earth, or within a particular ecosystem.
Why is biodiversity important
Because it reduces the dependance of one species on another for survival. If there are lots of different species, if one is removed, there are smaller effects.
Where can pollution occur
In water, from sewage, fertiliser or toxic chemicals.
In air, smoke or acidic gasses
On land from landfill
Pollution kills plants which reduces biodiversity
How does deforestation effect biodiversity
It removes trees that are good for habitats amd replaces them with oil palms and other commercial plants that dont benefit species.
Grow crops for biofuels.
What do peat bogs do
Destruction of them for compodt reduces habitat and variety in plants and animals
Decay and burning of peat releases co2.
Global warming
Global warming changes the balance of co2 and o2. Causes heating of atmosphere.
